Erosion repair at Länsi-Mustasaari island

Restoration of erosion-damaged terrain
in Länsi-Mustasaari will begin in summer
2025. The repaired vegetation will require
two growing seasons to recover before it
can withstand foot traffic.

The southern rampart section (batteries 3–4), marked on the map below, will be closed during the restoration and vegetation recovery period. Please do not enter the fenced-off area.

The 19th-century ramparts and shoreline, built from marine sand and protected under the Building Protection Act, have suffered erosion due to both human activity and weather conditions. The restoration is essential to preserve both the area’s biodiversity and its historical structural integrity.

The ramparts are covered by a meadow with diverse and valuable plant species. Restoration is essential to preserve both biodiversity and the historical landscape.
