The Governing Body of Suomenlinna
The Governing Body of Suomenlinna restores, maintains and provides information about Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Governing Body was established in 1973 as Suomenlinna was transferred from the Finnish Defence Forces to civil administration.
The Governing Body of Suomenlinna merged with the Finnish Heritage Agency on January 1, 2026.
The Governing Body of Suomenlinna employs approximately 70 permanent staff members and numerous seasonal workers. The organization is divided into three units: Restoration Services, Maintenance Services and World Heritage Services.
A Wide Range of Duties
The tasks of the Governing Body of Suomenlinna include restoration and maintenance of the fortress, buildings and landscape, leasing of business facilities and apartments, provision of information and administration of Suomenlinna.
Year-round, the Governing Body of Suomenlinna employs approximately 70 specialists from various fields. In the summer, i.e. the high season for tourism, there are more employees; especially the Maintenance unit employs fixed-term outdoor area workers.
The staff of the Governing Body consists of e.g. gardeners, architects, caretakers, tourist information personnel, carpenters, cleaners, electricians and painters.
The Host of a UNESCO World Heritage Site
As the host of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Governing Body of Suomenlinna is responsible for preserving the monument and associated historical and architectural values for future generations, too.
