A happy childhood is a secret garden full of imperishable beauty, morning dew, birdsong, the scent of flowers, the murmur of trees, light and shadows.” (Sylvi Kekkonen)

The boy Antti in the painting is peeking out the window. It´s been at least 100 years since then. Antti was able to live a happy childhood and also long life. He lived to be over 90 years old, farming his home farm in Sysmä. Surprisingly, the next owner of the farm is now Antti!

I hope, if only we could write stories like that about the other children in the paintings! I’m sure they all have dreams, like in the TV documentary (1974), where children talked their career aspirations: ”doctor-nurse of course!”, ”sweeper-car driver!”, ”teacher!” and others! Let’s give wings to dreams and encourage our children at home and at school to believe in the future, because life is full of possibilities!

I was a middle school math, physics, chemistry and computer science teacher for 30 years. I noticed, what could have happened even before they started middle school. Our job is to make children believe in themselves so that they could say: ”I can!” and ” I know how!” So, encourage your child from a young age , so you shall make a happy childhood possible!
