Coronation music by G.F. Handel and H. Purcell, festive music by J.S. Bach and music by Arvo Pärt.

Ensemble Nylandia celebrates and proclaims the Kuopio Festival’s closing concert with a special program and lineup: the program includes Purcell and Handel’s coronation music.

Handel composed four anthems for the coronation of George II in 1727 – his first work after receiving English citizenship – in which the king and queen are recognized as rulers in the eyes of the people and God.

With his composition, Handel not only showed his subjection but also skillfully adopted the core of the English anthem, which Purcell and other composers had created during centuries of monarchy: simultaneously grand and simple music for public spectacle.

In addition to the anthems, Bach Collegium Helsinki will bring to the concert, as its name suggests, festive music by Johann Sebastian Bach.

As a counterbalance to all the outward-looking proclamation, atmospheric and meditative melodies by Estonian master Arvo Pärt will also be heard in honor of his 90th birthday.
