Business Environment
Suomenlinna is a year-round home for 800 residents and one of the districts of Helsinki. Suomenlinna operators serve visitors, residents and, depending on the season, approximately 400-500 employees.
The goal of the World Heritage Convention is to increase appreciation for the unique heritage of different nations and to disseminate information about it. Currently, there are about thirty operators in Suomenlinna: restaurants, cafes, museums, galleries. These entrepreneurs serve visitors interested in culture and high-quality products and services, committed to the values of the World Heritage Site.
Entrepreneurs are an important part of the development of Suomenlinna; the sea fortress is being developed both as an internationally respected destination and as a vibrant neighborhood. Read more about the Suomenlinna management plan.
In a special environment, special guidelines direct activities: Making changes in protected buildings requires careful consideration, and antiquarian perspectives are always taken into account. Outdoor advertising is regulated by the operator’s signage plan. Only maintenance traffic is allowed in Suomenlinna, and when renting spaces, efforts are made to minimize car traffic. The operators of the World Heritage Site are also committed to promoting sustainable tourism. Its main features are described in the sustainable tourism strategy prepared by the the Governing Body of Suomenlinna. Explore the sustainable tourism strategy (pdf available only in Finnish).
Accessibility
The Helsinki regional transport’s passenger and service ferry reliably connects the sea fortress to the mainland every day throughout the year. From May to September, the accessibility is improved by a private operator’s water bus service. On the page Arrival to Suomenlinna, you can find more information about transportation connections.
Visitor services are mainly located along the main route, also known as the Blue Route. A slightly more accessible wheelchair route runs parallel to the main route. Read more about accessibility and mobility in Suomenlinna.
