In the old folk calendar, Kekri marked the turning of the year. The old year was dying, and the new one had not yet been born — it was a liminal time when magic and myth were at their strongest.
The gates to the other side were open; ancestors visited the celebrations, watching how their descendants lived, and all kinds of beings moved among the living.

Come meet the creatures of Kekri — and perhaps whisper a wish or a greeting into the Light Goat’s ear, or to the spirit world beyond.

Ticket link: https://suomenlinna.johku.com/fi_FI/liput/kurja-viapori(you are being redirected to another service)

Dive deeper into the dark autumn night on the Miserable Viapori guided tour. The fortress’s gloomy season is dedicated to murderers, escaped prisoners, silenced secrets, and the mortality of the human body.

The tour focuses on the true dark tales of Suomenlinna’s history. What kind of criminals were imprisoned here in the 1700s? Who was Juhani Aataminpoika? Where was the fortress’s infamous shantytown — a sort of proto-startup hub called Nystaden? In the darkness of the evening, the fortress walls, alleys, and archways take on an entirely new — shadowy — light.

Note: The tour takes place outdoors. Warm clothing and footwear suitable for uneven terrain are recommended. The route is unfortunately not accessible. Not suitable for children.

19:00 (fully booked) Guided Stargazing Walk in Finnish
Starting point: The kiosk at Tykistönlahti, near No. 22 on the map
Registration: Free of charge, but advance registration required (opens Monday 27 October).

Which constellations and planets are visible in the sky right now? What details of the Moon can be seen with the naked eye? On this guided walk led by Tuukka Perhoniemi from Ursa Astronomical Association, you’ll explore the wonders of the winter night sky.

In cloudy weather, the event turns into a “Walk through the Universe”, where you’ll discover where everything in the cosmos comes from — when the first stars ignited, the first galaxies formed, when dark energy began to influence, and what happened after the origin of life on Earth. Pretty fascinating stuff!

Duration about two hours. Please dress for the weather.

Theatre, (horror) film, creative movement and wellbeing activities, lullabies for adults, participatory scientific projects and other exciting in chronological order.

16.00–22 Rihmasto (sound work)
Location: Myllysali / Bakery corridor, map number 24
Free entry

Rihmasto grows like late autumn mycelium – layer by layer, quietly and inevitably. It listens to earth, air and fire – to the sighs of the surroundings, electric whispers, the heavy breath of autumn. Time bends in the darkness of Kekri, space lives: expanding like smoke, shrinking like a fading flame. Everything is as it should be – natural, inevitable, as old as soil itself.

Each layer builds upon the previous, like the cycle of the year – spring’s awakening, summer’s growth, autumn’s death, winter’s stillness – forming a space where sound merges into flow, and flow into sound.

For three decades Rihmasto has moved like a wandering flame, igniting new paths where sound refuses obedience and grows into its own being. It carries the listener through spaces, times and cycles where perception meets the rhythm of existence – just as in the Kekri night, the past and future, the living and the dead meet.

Journey to Light – Outdoor programme by Haaga-Helia students
Starting point: Rantakasarmi Vault
Free entry

Journey to Light is an outdoor programme created by event management students from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences. The experience is a route winding through the Viapori Kekri area, designed especially for families with children.

Step through the glowing gate into a magical world where wishes, fairies and festivity come to life. Hang your own wish on the Wishing Tree, search for hidden fairies with a flashlight in the depths of the playground, become part of the story with glitter face paint at Levyhalli, and listen to the whispers of fairies hidden within the walls of Bastion Höpken.

As evening falls, the spirits of light return for a radiant dance celebration open to all believers. Folklore dance performances (5–10 min) bring the story to life throughout the evening at 17.30, 18.30, 19.30, 20.30 and 21.30.

Adventures at activity points

First activity point at the tunnel in the Jetty Barracks: Entrace gate
On the map: yellow dot near number 3

When you step through the gate, you leave your everyday life behind and enter the Village of Light – a place where warmth, wonder and connection radiate around you. The lights glow, the music plays softly and there is a magic of anticipation in the air. This is where your journey into a world of light begins, where every corner has its own story. The gate is the boundary between reality and imagination – the first step towards magic.

Second activity point at the old phone booth: Wishing tree
On the map: yellow dot near number 8

In the middle of the village grows the Wish Tree, whose branches are decorated with ribbons, paper leaves and small lights. Each of them carries someone’s dream or wish. Visitors can write their own wish and attach it to the tree – so that everyone’s light is connected to the common glow. Over time, the tree becomes a symbol of hope, where everyone’s dreams glow together.

Third activity point at the playground: Find the light fairies
On the map: yellow dot near number 12

In the playful Reflector game, little spirits of light are hidden all around the playground. With the help of the lights, you can try to find the message hidden in the reflectors. When you find the word, you will receive a clue to the next adventure. The game invites you to use your curiosity and cooperation – and reminds you that light is often found in surprising places.

Fourth activity point in Levyhalli: Glitter face painting
On the map: yellow dot, number 20

This is where magic takes shape! Artists paint patterns inspired by light on faces – stars, moonbeams and village symbols. Every stroke of the brush transforms you into a character in the story: a bearer of hope, a spirit of light or a protector of the village. Painting is a moment where you yourself become part of the village’s story and its light.

Fifth activity point in Bastion Höpken: Höpkin
On the map: yellow and green dot, by the tunnel symbol

Here we stop to listen to Höpkin, the poetic soul of the village. The poem tells the story of the village of Light – its beginnings, its people and the meaning of light. The poem can be listened to or read in silence. It is a moment to stop and feel – to enter the heart of light with words and thoughts.

Sixth activity point at Susisaari: Folklore dancers
On the map: yellow and green dot, near number 32

The journey ends with dancing and joy. Music plays, lanterns swing, and everyone gathers together to celebrate the light. The steps merge into one rhythm and the village glows with life force. This is a moment when everyone is part of a common celebration – one with the light.

Folklore dance performances (5–10 min) bring the story to life throughout the evening at 17.30, 18.30, 19.30, 20.30 and 21.30.
