Duncan Butt Juvonen: The Sea, The Sea (Hall 1) and Emilia Pennanen: Earthed and waterborne (Petrichor) (Hall 2)
Duncan Butt Juvonen’s show addresses the passage of time, death and decay, offest with brightly coloured walls and Op Art stripes.
The images in this show are glitched, obscured. The colours are sucked out, bleached out of the pictures, washed off and abraded like something washed up on the shore. The messages are incomplete, the information decayed and interrupted. A deer smokes a pipe and contemplates a body of water.
In contrast to the decay and sapped colours, the black and white Op Art stripes create queasy waves of colour in the viewer’s eye where there is no colour.
Emilia Pennanen’s exhibition is rooted in the experience of a place where a twin flame burns. The twin flame (or mirror self) is a myth based on a single soul divided into two separate bodies. According to the original myth, humans were made of a single body with two heads, four arms, and four legs, until Zeus split them in two; thereafter, each half wandered the earth in search of its missing counterpart.
The exhibition consists of mixed-media photographic sculptures in which the act of seeing a landscape—and the physical and emotional experience of a place—transforms into a new location, a kind of reverie or its very opposite.
